A special TADA Court on Thursday sentenced Abu Salem to life imprisonment for his role in the 1993 Mumbai blasts which killed 257 people and injured around 700 others.
Abu Salem worked as a driver for the Dawood Ibrahim gang, transporting weapons and contraband. He was convicted for transporting weapons from Gujarat to Mumbai. He also confessed to delivering one of these many consignments to actor Sanjay Dutt’s house.
While Abu Salem has become the topic of discussion on the social media, some old pages of his life’s book are being re-read. One of the most controversial chapters of his life is his love affair with Bollywood actress Monica Bedi. It was said that Bedi was the apple of his eye. Even Monica was head over heels in love with him.
Monica, who had worked on shows like ‘Saraswatichandra’ (2013-14) and ‘Bandhan’ (2015), was last seen in the ‘Masoom’ is set to making a comeback on the small screen.
Monica Bedi’s early career had been riddled with intereference from her former lover, the mafia don, Abu Salem. They are now separated but their names continue to be tied together till date. It is not surprising given that Abu Salem allegedly threatened big guns of Bollywood in order to establish Monica’s career.
According to her interview with Showtime, Monica got a call from a guy in Dubai asking her to perform in his show. After a few phone calls, she started talking to him, without knowing that she was actually talking to the underworld don Abu Salem. He introduced himself as Arsalan Ali to her.
When Abu Salem invited her for the third time, she insisted on him to come to Mumbai, but he refused making excuses. It was during her third visit to Dubai that he revealed his true identity. He said that he wanted to change and he was in love with her.

It was after when Abu Salem and Monica Bedi were arrested in Portugal for forging entry into the country with fake passports, their relationship started dwindling. Salem sent her a notice asking her to accept him as a husband or divorce him.
For Monica, Abu used his power to get her roles in Bollywood films and she was featured in some of the Bollywood movies like Jodi No 1 which had stars like Sanjay Dutt, Govinda and Twinkle Khanna. In an interview to Indian Express, Monica clarified that she was not married to Abu Salem it was just a love. But Abu wanted to marry her and they were living in different countries to hide. The relation ended on July 4, 2007, after she served the sentence with Salem in many countries and prisons. 5 years after being arrested with Abu Salem in Lisbon, Portugal, Monica was released in India.
Salem was married to Samira Jumani, a 17-year-old college girl in 1991. He also has a son with Samira, who currently lives in Duluth, Georgia, United States. After Abu’s arrest in Portugal, Samira called him a ‘violent psychotic man’.
Bedi was a participant in “Big Boss” Season 2, a television reality show. She was one of the contestants of the reality shows “Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 3″ and “Desi Girl”. Monica acted in the Punjabi movie “Sirphire” (2012), directed by Harjit Singh Ricky.
Monica is now making a comeback, mainly with Punjabi movies. Her upcoming film is ‘Bandookan’.
