When Ranveer, who was present at the launch of ’83, was asked about his reaction on being offered the role of Kapil Dev, he noted, “I was born at the time when cricket was big time. When Kabir Sahab (director Kabir Khan) had come to me and said that there will be a film on 83, I was like finally. And when he was narrating it to me, I was like woooh. It is not a story just about cricket but a human story.”

The actor also shared that he was quite nervous when he was asked to do this role and questioned himself that how is he going to do this. “How am I going to do this? I am honoured that I will be a part of the biggest story. Goosebumps and goosebumps in the second part of the film, right Kabir sir?” added Ranveer.

This is not the first time Ranveer came close to cricket. He revealed that Jimmy (former cricketer Mohinder Amarnath) is the reason why he became an actor. Speaking at the special occasion organized to honour the stalwarts, the Bajirao Mastani actor told the audience that after scoring 71 runs off 46 balls in the seventh standard, he decided to try out for Amarnath’s cricket academy with his friends.

“I walked up to him with all my wit and asked for directions on what to do. He directed me to the pitch and that day I failed at the tryouts. And thanks to the failure that day, I am here today,” added the actor.

Kabir has finished his scripting and has started gearing up for the most ambitious project of his career. On Wednesday, Ranveer and Kabir with their team made an official announcement about the film.

Kapil Dev went down memory lane and said: “I was from agriculture background and all of my co-players were from cultured background. So, it had become a part of my image and it showed in my behaviour at the time.”

“When we started playing, it was played in English and not in Hindi. When I was made the captain, people said that I don’t even know how to speak in English and I shouldn’t be the captain. So, I said that they should call someone from Oxford to speak in English and I will continue to play cricket.”

The casting of the other cricket players is yet in process. Kabir has already scripted the film. The director said, “As a young schoolboy when I watched India win the 1983 Cricket World Cup I had no idea that from that day onwards Cricket in India will change forever. As a filmmaker, for me, the journey to that win, filled with raw energy and sheer passion of that young Indian team, is probably one of the most exciting stories I have worked on. And it’s great to have Ranveer come on board to play Kapil Dev, as honestly, I could see no one else for the role, ever since I started finalising the script.”
