The Nilgiri district administration sealed 11 resorts that had been functioning without approval on the elephant corridor in the buffer zone of the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR) on Sunday.
In these resorts, one is owned by popular actor Mithun Chakraborty. Earlier, notices were issued to the resorts giving them 48 hours time to vacate the buildings in the recreation spot as they were found to be illegal.
The administration had identified 39 illegally constructed resorts on elephant corridor. During the first phase, the authorities had sealed 27 resorts. Of the remaining 12, the officials had served notices to 11 resorts seeking valid documents or remove the structures.
The top court had on August 9 observed that elephants were a “national heritage” and expressed displeasure as to how constructions had come up on the elephant corridor of Nilgiris and directed sealing of the illegally built resorts on the elephant corridor.
They were asked by the court to produce relevant documents to the district collector within 48 hours of the order.
