Ness Wadia sentenced to 2 years jail term in Japan for possession of drugs

Business tycoon and owner of the Kings XI Punjab cricket team, Ness Wadia has been sentenced to a two-year jail term in Japan over possession of drugs.

As per a report of Financial Times (FT), he was caught in New Chitose Airport in the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido with 25 grams of cannabis resin earlier in March this year.

Wadia had allegedly admitted to the possession of drugs, saying it was for his personal use.

He spent a period in detention before his indictment on March 20 and an undisclosed period of detention before a court hearing. The Sapporo District Court handed him a two-year prison sentence, which was suspended for five years, the Financial Times report added.

Wadia has since left Japan and has returned to India, it further claimed.

Ness Wadia is the son of Nusli Wadia, a British Parsi businessman, entrepreneur and chairman of the Wadia Group.

For the uninitiated, Ness Wasia was in a relationship with Preity Zinta for five years. In 2008, they bought Kings XI Punjab team of Indian Premier League (IPL) together. On 13 June 2014, Zinta filed a complaint with the Mumbai police against Ness Wadia alleging he had molested, threatened, and abused her at an IPL match at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on 30 May. Wadia has denied the allegations.
