Filmmaker SS Rajamouli, who is busy with his magnum opus Baahubali: The Conclusion, is already planning his next film. Aamir Khan, SS Rajamouli and Shah Rukh Khan, all these have expressed their desire to make a film on ‘Mahabharat’. SS Rajamoula has also met Aamir Khan. But what is this! Suddenly another actor has announced to make a film on ‘Mahabharat’.
Yes, Malayalam superstar Mohanlal has officially announced that, he will soon make a film on ‘Mahabharat’ and will play the role of powerful Bhim in the film. The film will be an adaptation of Jnanpith award winning author MT Vasudevan Nair’s classic novel Randamoozhan.
The movie will be directed by ad-filmmaker Shrikumar Menon. It will be produced by UAE-based Indian businessman BR Shetty, who is the founder and Chairman of UAE Exchange and NMC Healthcare. He is reportedly investing Rs 1000 crore on the project.
In a statement issued here, Shetty said the film will be produced in two parts and the shooting will begin next year. He said the first part would be released in 2020 and 90 days later the second part also would be released. The film would be made in English, Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Telegu and Kannada besides being dubbed into other Indian and foreign languages. To be directed by ad film maker V.A. Shrikumara Menon, the story of the film is an adaptation of M.T. Vasudevan Nair’s Jnanpeeth Award winning novel, “Randamoozham”, which narrates the Mahabharata story through the perspective of Bhima.

National award winning actor Mohanlal will portray the character of Bhima. It is also being said that the crew will involve some big names from Hollywood. “This movie will be a true ‘Make in India’ made for the world. I am confident that this film would be adapted in 100 languages and reach three billion people,” said Shetty in a statement.

Mohanlal is honoured to play the role of Bhima. “I feel honoured that my name has been heard for the role of Bhima ever since the news of a cinematic adaptation of Nair’s Randamoozham started doing rounds. I feel humbled and honoured at the same time that the author himself has envisioned me for enacting Bhima,” said Mohanlal.
Earlier to this, the gargantuan project was announced in 2014 with stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Vikram and Nagarjuna in the lead roles. Baahubali director SS Rajamouli also said that it has always been his dream to direct Mahabharata in an epic scale. In fact, Rajamouli discussed the project with Aamir Khan before Baahubali 2.
“I want to do Mahabharata and I have said that many times but definitely not immediately after Baahubali. Mahabharat is such an epic that I need to up my craftsmanship to handle such a subject. Yeah I met Aamir ji once quite sometime back, We spoke about Mahabharata. I know that he’s very much interested in doing the film. But as I said, at present I am not thinking anything beyond Baahubali. Mahabharata is definitely not after this,” Rajamouli was quoted.
