Madhur Bhandarkar cancels press conference of ‘Indu Sarkar’ after threats from Congress

Madhur Bhandarkar’s film ‘Indu Sarkar’ which recreates the events during the Emergency of 1977 in India is constantly being opposed by Congress.

Now, recently, the press conference of the film was cancelled when Congress activists did not allow Madhur Bhandarkar to come out of his hotel.

Bhandarkar had put up at Hotel Centre Point, Ramdaspeth. His press conference was scheduled at Port O’ Gomez restaurant in Gandhi Nagar at 11.30am. Around 50 Congress workers, led by city president Vikas Thakre, gathered in front of the hotel and started raising slogans against the filmmaker and the movie.

Sensing trouble, Bhandarkar cancelled his press conference at around 11.15am. His personal staff passed on the message to the journalists gathered at Port O’ Gomez.

Bhandarkar even tweeted a few images of some of the Congress party members. He captioned them, “Congress workers have barged in the hotel lobby and created ruckus, me and the team are stranded like hostages in hotel room. Pune activity cancelled.”

The film’s spokesperson said, “We received a call from Sanjay Chordiya from Surya who had arranged the whole press conference. He urged us to cancel it as they received a threat from local Congress party workers. As soon as we got to know, we cancelled the event.” Asked if Bhandarkar will release the film in Pune, he said, “I will release the film all over India and I think people who talk about freedom of expression should stand for this now… This is the time.”

This period drama is based on the 21-month long period from 1975 to 1977, when Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had unilaterally declared a state of emergency across the country.

The film features Kirti Kulhari, Tota Roy Chowdhury, Neil Nitin Mukesh and Anupam Kher in pivotal roles. While Supriya Vinod will be seen essaying the role of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Neil Nitin Mukesh will be seen playing Sanjay Gandhi in the movie.
