‘Sooryavansham’ which gets flopped at the time of its release, is one of the most popular films today. In the film Amitabh Bachchan was in the lead role. It is also the only Hindi film that the late actress Soundarya acted in. Saundariya died after 5 years of film release at the age of 31. She was pregnant when she died.
Soundarya’s first movie was the Kannada film Gandharva in 1992. Then the same year she acted in the Telugu movie Raithu Bharatham opposite superstar Krishna. She made 114 movies, predominantly in Telugu, in a span of twelve years. Her last film was the Kannada film Apthamitra, a run away hit with Vishnuvardhan. This film also won her the Filmfare Award for Best Actress posthumously in 2004.
Soundarya died in an aircraft crash near Bangalore on 17 April 2004 when she was on her way to Karimnagar to campaign for the Bharatiya Janata Party and Telugu Desam Partycandidate for the upcoming elections. She was pregnant when she died.The aircraft took off at 11:05 a.m. and turned in a westerly direction before crashing on the campus of the Gandhi Krishi Vigyan Kendra of the University of Agricultural Sciences. It had reached only a height of 100 feet before it crashed and burst into flames. B.N. Ganapathi, one of the two persons working on the experimental fields of the university, who rushed to the aircraft to save the occupants, said the plane wobbled before the crash.
Soundarya’s real name was Sowmya Satyanarayan. She was born on 18 July 1976 to industrialist, and Kannada film writer K. S. Satyanarayan in Kolar, Karnataka, India. Just a year before the death, she got married to G. S. Raghu, who is a Software Engineer. If reports are to be believed, in 2010, G. S. Raghu got married another girl named Arpita.
In 1998, during an interview, Soundarya was asked if she wanted to become an actress? She said, “Doing films was the last option in my mind. My father was a filmmaker and I used to accompany him on the sets. I wanted to complete MBA and to go in a business line. But when my father’s friend approached me for an interesting role, I decided to come in acting.”
Soundarya mainly worked in Telugu Movies and Few Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi Films. Talking about South Indian actors, Soundarya worked with Rajinikanth in many films like Arunachalam, Padaiyappa. She also worked with Chiranjeevi in the film Choodalani Vundi.
Soundarya got the Best Actress Award for Filmfare (South) for Kannada film ‘Apthamitra’, which was released after her death in 2004. Before this, In 2002, she has received the National Film Award for Best Feature Film (producer) for Dweepa.
In an interview, Soundarya said that before Sooryavansham, she had received many offers for several Bollywood films. But she rejects them because she did not liked it script. She said, “I liked the role in Sooryavansham and said yes to film.”
She also revealed that She is a big fan of Amitabh Bachchan. She said, “I love watching movies of Amitabh Bachchan and he is one of my favourite actor. I was eagerly waiting for the shooting of Sooryavansham. Because I was sure to learn a lot from seeing him performing.”
