Famous Gazal singer Pankaj Udas turns 67 today. He was born on May 17, 1951 in Jetpur in Gujarat. Pankaj Udhas went on to become one of the most successful ghazal singers of Indian subcontinent, and still sings today.
But if talk about his personal life, than his love life is not less than any filmy story. Pankaj Udhas met his wife Farida way back in 1979 at his neighbour’s house. The young Pankaj was still pursuing his graduation, while Farida worked as an air hostess for Air India.
They become friends and soon they start meeting each other. Within couple of months of their first meeting they developed a deeper affiliation, and started seeing one another.
Pankaj’s family’s reaction was positive about the relationship between him and Farida. But Farida’s parents were not ready for their relationship. And, the reason was Pankaj came from a family of ancestral landlords, while Fairda belonged to the Parsi community, where an individual marrying outside the clan is usually disavowed by the entire community.

After that, Pankaj and Farida decided that they will only get married when their parents will agree. They decided to wait for few years and then seek permission of their families.
Pankaj is the youngest of the three brothers. His eldest brother Manhar Udhas achieved some success as a Hindi playback singer in Bollywood films. His second elder brother Nirmal Udhas is also a well-known Ghazal Singer and was the first of the three brothers to start singing in the family.
Pankaj’s first ghazal album, Aahat, was released in 1980. After this, he started receiving offers from Bollywood. After that, he launched two more albums Tarannum (1981) and Mehfil (1982).
After the launch of three albums, Pankaj had become famous in the world of singing. During this time, he decided to meet Farida’s father, who was a retired police officer. Pankaj once told in an interview that when he visited Farida’s father, he was very nervous. Farida’s father listened him patiently and gets agreed “If you think you can be happy then go ahead,” he said.
After getting permission from family, Pankaj and Farida ties the knot on February 11, 1982. The couple was blessed with their first daughter Nayab in 1986, and completed their family with their second daughter Reva in 1995.
Pankaj once said in an interview that his wife stayed with him like a true life partner and she was even by his side when life hit a low note. “While I was launching my first album, I ran short of a few thousand rupees. Farida didn’t have money either (we weren’t married then). But the next day she handed over the sum to me. She had borrowed it. Nothing can match this ever!” Pankaj said.
“We’ve promised each other that no matter how much we argue, we’ll never fight over religion.” he added.
Pankaj and Farida kept their personal life private. After being married for so many years they are still head over heels in love with each other.
