She was best known for playing the on-screen mother to protagonists in hit films like ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’, ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun’, ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ and ‘Hum Saath-Saath Hain’.

The Bollywood film industry is mourning the sudden demise of the actress. A number of former co-stars, friends, fellow members of the film industry and fans poured in their condolences and messages for the late actress.

Aamir Khan along with his wife Kiran Rao, Kajol, Rishi Kapoor, Mahesh Manjrekar and many other celebss even went to pay their last visit to the actress at her residence. Bhagyashree who made her debut with Reema in Maine Pyaar Kiya is deeply saddened by her sudden demise and is regretting of not meeting her over the years.

“My first memory of her is her peach complexion and light eyes. She reminded me so much of my mother. It didn’t take me long to get close to her. She was one person who was always smiling. We would often sit and just chit-chat,” says Bhagyashree.

While talking to DNA, Bhagashree said, ”  When I got the news that Reemaji is no more, I was in the hospital with a friend. Reemaji was so full of life, and playful that one cannot imagine her not being there. She was sweet and we shared a strong bond. When we were shooting for Maine Pyar Kiya, she would regale me and Salman (Khan) with wonderful stories of her plays – incidents of staging plays in small-towns. She was always joking and laughing. She was slightly older to Salman and me but we never felt that. She had her naughtiness and would play pranks. In fact, that matar chilnewala scene in Maine Pyar Kiya came out so naturally because we bonded so well. Soorajji (Barjatya) didn’t have to direct that scene.”

She further added, ”  When people saw the film they felt Suman (my character) is the kind one wants to take home, but I would always say Reemaji as the mother-in-law is someone every girl would want to have – So kind, playful and yet so strong. She had a twinkle in her eye and when she smiled it was from the heart. Her attitude was ‘let’s have fun together’. When we did ‘Kaid Mein Hai Bulbul’ she played my mother and we shared a different kind of equation. She would bring home-cooked food and achar which she made and was so good!”

Bhagyashree regrets not keeping in touch with her. “Such times make you think that you meet so many wonderful people in your life, but our personal lives take over. It gets tough to keep in touch. Then when you get such news, you feel lost. She was such a lovely person and I feel —why didn’t I keep in touch with her. I hope God gives her peace,” she says.

Reema Lagoo died of cardiac arrest on Thursday morning. She was 59.
