After several years of editing and graphic designing, Ravi Udayawar has now begun to debut in the direction with the movie ‘Mom’. The film might be Sridevi’s 300th film, but that doesn’t dissuade her from being as excited and curious as a debutante. How is this movie, let’s find out..

Mom movie review

Story of the movie:

This story is a relationship of a mother Devaki (Sridevi) who is a teacher and her daughter Arya (Sajal Ali) who is a studied in her class. One day a student named Mohit sends a messy message to Arya. Because of which Devaki punishes Mohit in class. After a few days, in a Valentine’s Day Party, to get a revenge for that punishment, Mohit rapped Arya with his friends and threw her into the drain.  After the culprits are declared innocent by the court, Arya’s step mother Devaki, decides to teach them a lesson in her own way but it’s not an easy task. A private investigator Daya Shankar Kapoor (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) tries to help her but the police come in their way. Will Devaki be able to avenge her daughter’s culprits?

Script Analysis

There’s no doubt about this. “Mom” has some stellar performances. However, while the story is strong and gripping, it’s not unique, it’s not new. I can’t help but point out similarities with Raveena Tondon’s “Maatr”.T his is a story that has seen multiple times, in different ways.

Direction:

For the first time, Ravi Udayavar, who is directing the film, is the best of his work. He has done a good direction and the cinematography of the film is good.  The story of the film is weak and there is nothing new. There was more work to be done on story. The film is gripping, although a few unwanted scenes in the second half where it tends to stretch could be chopped. The film particularly takes time to reach the climax.

Star Cast Performance:

Sridevi shows that she is one of the finest actors Bollywood and she carries the entire film on her shoulders and how! Nobody could have essayed Devaki better than her. Sridevi’s performance is very good and as a mother, she has acted very beautiful which can bring tears in your eyes. To describe in one word, she is outstanding.

Dayashankar Kapoor aka DK (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) is the real charmer in Mom. He knows exactly when to switch gears and how to look timid despite being in the spotlight. The way he gets into the skin of the character is commendable! The supremely talented actor only gets better with every film.

Akshaye Khanna is once again seen in a simple avatar. He impresses as the tough crime branch cop.

Sajal Ali, in the role of the troubled daughter, matches the veteran of 300 films step for step. Adnan Siddiqui is unwaveringly solid as the doting father and ever-beholden husband who stands like a rock by the two women.

Music Direction:

A.R Rahman’s background music creates just the right impact for a story like this. I liked the track Chal Kahin Door and O Sona Tere Liye crooned by the composer himself.

What’s Good:

It’s been five years since we saw Sridevi nailing it in English Vinglish (2012). Though she has made a stunning comeback with “Mom”. This is a film, which will inspire women to not feel weak or helpless, to awaken the fiery Goddess inside them and fight against the wrong. Mom is a film relevant for the present time in a country where violence against women is rampant.

What’s Bad:

This is a story that I have seen multiple times, in different ways.

Watch Or Not:

Can see once for Sridevi and Nawazuddin’s awesome performance.
